Separate accountability from companionship
A companion shares the walk. Accountability gives the walk a consequence. Those can come from different places. You may prefer walking alone while still wanting your completed distance to matter to a group, challenge, or weekly result.
Choose a structure that still works when schedules change
One-to-one arrangements are vulnerable to one person becoming busy. A supplied team or standing challenge remains available when a friend cancels, travels, changes jobs, or simply loses interest.
Measure the behavior you want to repeat
If your goal is to walk more often, reward completed walking rather than an extreme daily number. A weekly measure can recognize the walk you actually had time to complete without encouraging you to chase steps late at night.
Keep autonomy where it helps
Accountability should not require identical pace or location. The useful version lets you choose when and where to walk while still connecting the result to other people.
