Step goals capture the whole day
A step target can encourage frequent movement and recognize errands, work, and short breaks. It can also produce an arbitrary late-evening chase when the number becomes more important than the reason you wanted to move.
Time goals define a deliberate session
A minutes-based goal is easy to schedule and can distinguish a chosen walk from incidental movement. It does not automatically describe distance or effort, but it often makes planning simpler.
Use distance when the route matters
Distance can be useful for preparing for an event, comparing familiar routes, or contributing to a mileage-based challenge. It may be less helpful when terrain, pace, and available time vary widely.
A hybrid can remain simple
You can use one primary measure and one boundary: for example, walk for twenty minutes at a comfortable effort, or complete a chosen route without chasing extra steps afterward. Avoid turning every available metric into another obligation.
